Don't let Conservative white men take away our abortion rights.

Do not become complacent about the right to abortion in Canada. Right now there are no laws in Canada regulating abortion. We do not want the politicians to change that.  We are one of the only countries in the world were there are no legal restrictions, and  where abortion is governed by the Canada Health Act.  Sadly regulations and accessibility still differs per province. The reason for this mostly unrestricted access was the work of Dr Henry Morgentaler. He fought the government arguing ALL women should have access to safe abortions in Canada.

In 1988, the Supreme court of Canada struck down the Abortion law from 1969, which was extremely restrictive. Under the 1969 law you had to present yourself to a committee of 3 people at certain hospitals in large urban centers. If you were a teen you had to bring your parents, if you were married you had to bring your husband. The committee would decide if you should have access to abortion. In some hospitals the committee did nothing but exist. It never approved one abortion.

Depending on your geographical location, it was almost impossible for some women to have access to a safe abortion before 1990. And in some provinces like PEI, there were no services and women typically had to travel to Moncton, NB to be able to obtain a legal abortion. This makes abortions especially hard to obtain for the young and the poor. Still today access is restricted by geographic location. Those in remote communities have to travel far to have access to safe abortions.

When I had an abortion in 1987 - I had to have an illegal one. I was lucky that Montreal had a Morgentaler clinic, near Metro Honore Beaugrand. It cost me $350 and the visit took one hour. No one shamed me, Dr Morgentaler had amazing bedside manner and made patients feel comfortable, with this procedure no one wants to have. If I'd lived in a small village in Northern Quebec, would I even had been aware of the Morgantaler clinic? Would anyone have told me? Or would I have been shamed in carrying an unwanted pregnancy?

While it was REALLY difficult to have the abortion and I had very little time to think once I realized I was pregnant [I was at least 10 weeks when I took pregnancy test - which back then you took your morning urine to a pharmacy and they called back 2 days later] I know by the time I had abortion I was close to cutoff date for first trimester abortions.  I was one of those women who's cycle varied from 14 days to 42 days. I'm also a woman who used birth control and still got pregnant.

Women's reproductive rights should belong to women/afab. Being able to decide to terminate a pregnancy should be a right every woman/afab person has. Women from my grandmother's generation have died or bleed so much during childbirth, they had brain damage. Both my mom and grandma were told not to have any more children by their family doctor,  as the next one would probably end their life. Having me nearly killed my mom and made her health poor until I was six.  My grandma was scolded often by the parish priest for only having 3 children in the Catholic Quebec of 1930's.

Women pay a HIGH PRICE to carry children they DO want. They should not have to choose between their life and carrying an unwanted child or an unhealthy child or a stillborn one.  They should never be retaken into a police station and interrogated or jailed EVER for miscarrying or safely terminating their pregnancy. One in three women have at least one miscarriage in their life time. It's traumatic enough to go through without others trying to decide if you should be labelled a killer never mind facing legal consequences.  No woman should ever have to justify why she terminated a pregnancy or lost a baby. The emotional scars stay with us for life just from the events itself.

Note, I use the term woman, but please know this rant includes anyone who physically can be pregnant no matter what label you use or how you identify, I am thinking about your rights too.

Disappointed in other Canadians.

Today I read about a black man in New Brunswick who just pulled over at a wharf to go read a book. SEVERAL people reported him as SUSPICIOUS. WHy ? Because he's black???? WTF?????

The other story that almost made me cry was some asshole who took it upon himself to PEPPER SPRAY a group of Syrian refugees being welcomed in Vancouver.  What possesses someone to go and attack a random group of people they didn't even know!!!!

I mean what have those refugees done to the person with the fucking pepper spray? NOTHING, he never met them before. BUT he felt the need to be a ginormous jackass. I hope they find him, and deport him to whatever close-minded country he's from!!! There was no follow up in the news about this attack, but at least the Syrians took it in stride.

I'm so disappointed. I mean I knew Canada still has a long way to go before it treats it's natives like human beings, but now they are attacking blacks {Which have been in Canada for several hundreds of years} and Syrians, also people who started to relocate to Canada back in the late 1800's.

This twit proudly wears her "Canada" Tshirt

But the Canada she thinks she lives in is NOT my Canada.  This twit thought it was ok to go attack unprovoked a young Muslim woman with a small child in a supermarket!!!!! Why is it that people think it's that someone who looks different from them should be attacked or that they don't belong?

The best I read yesterday was shared by one occupy acquaintance who witnessed it in an IGA in the Pointe yesterday.

Overseen at the IGA:
White woman: Does it get hot like this?
Black man: *shopping*
White woman: *louder and slower* DOES IT... GET HOT LIKE THIS?
Black man: ...Excuse me?
White Woman: *exasperated* Where you're from. You know. AFRICA.
Black man: Ma'am... I'm from Verdun.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I had Haitian neighbours 50 years ago in Montreal North. Blacks are not new arrivals in Montreal or in Canada, the first one visiting came with Samuel de Champlain, and there have been communities formed since the late 1800's in Montreal.

Same with Muslims, some Lebanese and Syrian Canadians have been in Canada since the late 1800's as well. Canadian Muslims in the past were less likely to be visibly Muslim but the past 10 years more Muslim women have adopted the Hijab.  It never occurs to anyone that some Muslims are born in Canada and some non Arab Canadians can also be Muslims because they decided to convert.

One of the stupid things I saw yesterday was this Good for the woman to remind this idiot that he's the idiot in this location.

Similar story shared was a Native American speaking Lakota to someone and being told "THis is the United States of America, speak English"

Syrian Consultate in Montreal Closed!

Finally Canada closed down the Syrian consulate in Montreal.  The Consul, Ms Nelly Kanou is a regime sympathizer and supporter. Many of the Syrians I knew in Montreal did not want their papers renewed there after Canada closed the embassy in Ottawa in 2012.

Finally Jean Coutu saw the light. Here is the news about it.

Our Prime Minister is right out of Vogue?

We help everyone in Canada.

Whenever there is a post about bringing refugees, I often see comments like "what about our homeless?" or "what about our veterans?" or "what about the poor natives living in squalor?" rhetoric..

Our government spends $4 billion per annum to fight homelessness.

Our government spends $3.64 Billion per annum on veteran affairs.

Our government spends $8.4 Billion per annum on indigenous affairs.

Our government is spending $1.2 billion over 6 years ($200 million per annum) on Syrian refugees..

There are 35 million Canadians and 28.7 million of them can work (16-65)

That means each individual taxpayer pays about $115 per annum on our homeless, $104 per annum on our veterans, $240 per annum on indigenous affairs and will spend about $6 per annum on refugees..

Souces:

You can see the budget for Canadian Homeless here:

You can see the budget for Veteran Affairs here: $3.64 Billion

You can see the budget for our Indigenous people here: $8.4 Billion

You can see the cost to bring in Syrian Refugees here: $1.2 billion over 6 years ($200 million/ year)

Syrians would rather stay near their homes!

It's amusing me how much the Americans are so Anti-Syrian refugees, but what they are failing to realize is that most Syrians don't want to come to America. They would rather stay in the region, in the mIddle east, or even north Africa, then Europe.  North America comes last in destinations they wish to live in.

Personally if I was in their situation I'm not sure I'd want to start my life over in a  new country or hope for things to get better in mine and be able to go back home.

So all this hate propaganda over people who certainly aren't coming to America in boatloads!

Welcome to Canada....

It's sad. Most people forget that as Canadians most of us are immigrants or the children of immigrants. Unless your family is native American or aboriginal, you or your family came here as a new comer at some point. I think it's particularly hypocritical to say that you don't want any more new comers to Canada. Especially not some that are fleeing conflict. I bet you more then half of this country are descendent of immigrants, or even refugees.  Did YOUR family come to Canada to cause terrorism? No. Well then why assume others do as well?

I have an employee at work that migrated to Canada some 20 years ago. He fears the Syrian refugees. He said that when he chose to come here, he chose Canada because he shared the values of this country.  I'm not sure why  he thinks Syrian refugees don't share the values of this country. Most of the ones in refugee camps in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq, are middle class folks, who left Syria when it became unsafe to live with their family. Most of those with enough money resettled elsewhere then in Syria but those who just had enough money to leave, end up in refugee camps across the region and they no longer have a home to go to.

These are people that were not poor or uneducated. They know there is a better world out there for them and their children and pray every day in hopes that one country will take them in. Those who had more money are the ones who made the perilous journey to Europe, to help their case along. Waiting for years in a refugee camp in hopes you might find a home is not good. THIS is what encourages fundamentalism and terror. The thought that you are unwelcome EVERYWHERE.

Trudeau's promise to take in 25000 Syrian refugees before the year is over, is under way. They are focusing right now on bringing families, orphans and single mothers with children.  That is, they will not be bringing in single men for the time being.  This is obviously a compromise to appease those that say that we are going to be letting in ISIS in the midst of the refugees. I believe the single men will be screened more vigorously so it may take more time for Canada to be bringing them in.

From all I've read all the terror I've witnessed or lived through in Montreal [Mainly the FLQ in my childhood], was perpetrated by locals. By French Quebecois.  If I'm afraid of anyone it's of those of my own background. The French Quebecois.

Personally I am welcoming Syrians to Montreal. May they find peace and humanity in Montreal.

Canada does not give "REFUGEE PENSIONS"

I've seen this stupid graphic, and as someone who has sponsored a husband to come to Canada, I know new arrivals get NOTHING.  Heck for the first 3 years he was in Canada I was solely responsible for his needs. The Quebec government had made sure I'd signed a paper to say this as well.

Refugees that are sponsored don't get much help either. And the ones that aren't do get some handouts however they also end up with huge debts at first to cover travel costs to Canada.

Historical words... " A cabinet that looks like Canada"

And when he was asked why, Justin Trudeau said "Because it's 2015".

That's the best answer, really.

I wondered why my mom was so enamoured with Trudeau Sr. If Jr. is any indication, I'm now understanding as an adult what I missed as a child.

If the mixed gender cabinet is telling, so is the fact there are 10 aboriginals  and 10 Muslims that have been elected. Also notable, one cabinet minister arrived in Canada as a refugee!!!!  Putting a female aboriginal in charge of the Justice department was just what this country needed. Here's the rest of the cabinet

Two faced hypocrits

So the conservatives go around writing that Trudeau supports legalizing drugs, including hard drugs in other languages like Chinese and Punjabi to scare some of the immigrant voters, but then goes to parties with the Ford brothers.

EVERYONE in the world knows about Rob Ford and his crack cocaine habit.  That sounds pretty much like Harper ENDORSES Ford's lifestyle choices.  Go figure.

So Harper is against Legalizing marijuana  but is fine with politicians who use Crack Cocaine....

Sheeple....

Canada will be known as a bunch of fucking sheep. So far since 2011, ONLY 2 burqa wearing women were prevented from getting Canadian citizenship

You'd think after reading the news and the amount of Islamophobia that there were hundreds of thousands niqab wearing women in Canada.

Nope just 2.   Makes you think doesn't it?

FOR 2 people the entire country is thinking we are getting overrun by Muslims and if we don't act now, soon we will be Saudi Arabia.  Uhm. no.
