This morning it was sunny in my yard but when I looked next door it was pissing rain. This is the weird effect I got trying to capture the rain. You can tell my 12ft sportspal canoe is wet.

Freezing rain sucks
Yesterday it went up to 6 and we had freezing rain most of the day. Made for spectacularly icy roads, which reminds me I need to salt my path so the mailman does not kill himself.
Yesterday was the first day back at work and I had 6 interns start. So far so good, none are grating on my nerves already and they seem ok. We'll see as time goes.
I also had a date last night, for the first time in years. Probably since 2006 or 2007. Yeah I don't go out much. I met him at Pushaps, on Sources. When I arrived, the owner asked me how I was doing. I've been going to this restaurant for close to 20 years, so I asked him how business was doing. He answered business is good, especially with loyal customers such as you who brave the bad weather to have dinner here :)
My date arrived on time, and seemed happy to see me [no he didn't have a banana in his pocket]. Conversation found us just as easily in person as it did online both emails and chat. That was a relief. as I have particularly awkward days. In person he reminds me of the father of my daughters. He's about same height and built, though probably much slimmer then ex now. Once I was able to get his work clothes out of my head and see him more as himself, it helped a great deal. Tucked in shirts and business casual is not as bad as suit & tie but apparently does nothing to turn me on either.
After dinner I invited him back to my place to talk some more. We had a really nice time. Cannot wait to see him again. Jethro had a nice talk with him and even Ziva liked him, my little anti-social diva!
Oh and don't get me started about the cats. First they sat and watched us interact, then they fought. I mean how often do Jethro and Ziva fight? Practically never. She was hissing! Both managed to take off their collars and play with the collars on the floor to make noise and tell me that they had taken it off. They also tore around the house like maniacs and Ziva enjoyed play deer. Between their antics and how I'm feeling there's definitely another storm coming our way
Now have to get my ass in gear to get ready for work. It's -15 outside today, nice contrast to yesterday's warmth and everything will be iced up today.

Day 5: We drive around Cape Breton Highlands National Park
Don't think I've ever been this annoyed and scared in a while. It rain and it was so windy that the mother of all tarps, the big tarp to cover our big tent, is destroyed. Also our tent has 3 broken frame posts. Rather all 3 poles have at least 1 broken piece that I taped together with some duck tape so that I could finish the trip with this tent.
Because I'm highly paranoid I spent half the night worried the wind would lift our tent and ditch us in the middle of the gulf of St Lawrence. In the end we survived if not a bit traumatized with the experience. Note to self , when camping somewhere really windy, use a low tent and lots and lots of pickets.
We went to the information center at the park at Cheticamp and the lady allowed us to change campsites, to one in the woods, far from the Ocean and the gale force winds for no extrsa fee. Pity though. The view at Corney brooke was spectacular, but with the force of the wind today our tent would just keep on breaking, it just didn't make sense to stay there. Now we are stuck inside a forest where there will be lots of bugs.
Neither one of us slept so we were pretty crabby. Typical maritime weather of storms. Everything that could go wrong did go did last night. So at least we had a bit of luck today. We were able to change campsites for no extra fee. Showers are free here and it was nice and hot. That was good since I was so fried and frazzle, from not sleeping and fearing hte tent would become airborn. At least it was warm in my sleeping bag!
But I'm used to it raining whenever I camp. I always try to bring sufficient rain gear. Including my rain boots, raincoat, rainpants and jacket. Between all that I managed to say somewhat warm and dry.
I messaged my eldest daughter but did not get an answer. I do not get any reception in the Park except at the information centers where there is wifi. She messaged me back later to say that while she could get leave she was still duty ready so could not leave Halifax.
We went to visit the bog and saw a Moose on the way back.

Visiting friend arrives with torrential rain
My gf who now lives in New Brunswick will be with us for about 10 days. She's decided to come and hang out in Montreal for a bit while hubby is working and has the company of his grand-pa. My gf and her kids don't seem to appreciate grand-pa all that much and I don't blame them.
She was supposed to drive down on Friday but was sick with a head cold and did not think driving 8-9 hours would be a good idea until her head cleared. So she drove down on Sunday. Not only did she get the psychotic weather, which included rain, thunderstorms, hail, ice pellets, storm winds and could develop tornadoes, but she had the misfortune of driving to Montreal on the last day of the construction holiday. Everyone, their mother, and their dog, was coming back from vacation.

Where I live in Pierrefonds, other then a few larger then normal puddles, there was no flooding. Heck I'm happy I live in a low-lying area in Pierrefonds, my street didn't flood, nor did my basement. I guess the 2 sump pumps did their jobs!

Lousy fucking vacation with rain
It rained most of this week of vacation. I mean it rained last Sunday because of Irene, it rained a bit Monday morning before we left for Frontenac. It rained Tuesday around lunch time and then Tuesday night. Don't remember rain Wednesday but there was some Thursday and Friday and Saturday and Sunday and Monday.
Other then the fact my plans got screwed and I feel horrible. I have work this morning and have 3 new stagieres starting and I just want to crawl under a rock, I don't want to go to work. I just want to call in sick. How am I going to fake a smile and be nice when I feel horrible and miserable?

Wet summer and opportunities for Canadian Women.
I had read reports that summer 2011 would be a hot, dry, see droughts, summer. Really? So far the days of summer we've had in Montreal have included rain, hail, rain and more rain. We've had few days were it was sunny, and if it was it wasn't all day.
It's dark and gloomy this morning, today and tomorrow we might have scattered thunderstorms and then Thursday showers, because the scattered thunderstorms weren't enough.
Interesting read about women this morning. Women currently feel they have access to a lot more then their mothers did. I certainly do. I know my mom had little or no rights when I was a baby. I had rights as a single mom in the late 80's that my mom didn't have as a single mom in the early 60's. I'm not sure like the women in the article, if I feel worried for my daughters. I feel they will have at least the same advantages I had growing up and maybe less worries about if they can succeed as women in the world. It was harder to believe though I had women in my family who were successful single women as they were not the norm. Right now my daughters have lots of women who they can look up to for inspiration that are outside their family. I think that rocks.
Of course I worry about the women in Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia and other parts of the world where they have little rights and little access to education and I hope that with time their daughters will have access to the same life my daughters do.

Joyeuse St Jean Baptiste !
This wasn't the best St Jean. It rained, at times heavily throughout the day. It wasn't particularly warm either, sucks it was a day off work. If anything this should have been the weather of early June not late June. But it won't stop me from enjoying my 4 day week-end. I really hope it won't rain all 4 days, I still need to do a lot of work in the garden.
This is how today felt.

It's raining again
I often have such a hard time getting my brain started on days where it rains. Today is no exception. In fact today is a prime example of me having a hell of a time getting my brain in gear. The first email I have is from my therapist, who loves to change my appointments at the last minute.
My appoinment was to be at 7pm tomorrow night, this morning, I get an email asking to change for 5pm. This is totally inconvenient for me since I was planning working till 7:30 or 8 every day this week because I'm not coming in on Friday. I can't see myself going back to work after talking to therapist. That's when I need to go home because my emotions are at the surface and I need to put them back under lock and key lest I blow up at some poor unsuspecting soul at work.
This week of all weeks. I also have interviews to do for students for Fall semester for one university and a pile of other work that I need to get through. Especially since I'd planned my schedule properly. He almost always changes appointments at the last minute, but sometimes the appointments are too early.
Last night I chatted my eldest while she polished her boots. She's got a 4-person room to herself at the moment. That might change when other groups arrive for other classes if there is a woman. She might end up with a room mate or 3. She figures she'll be alone probably till sometime in June.
She showed me pictures of her room and proudly told me they had made a clamp in her class. Falls under category of making your own parts if no parts are available at sea I suppose. Her teacher is female so that's helpful for her. At least she has someone she can look at when the guys are being guys and get a knowing look back :) I need to add she's the lone female in a class of 10.
Just got another email asking me if I can come at the scheduled time on Wednesday to see my therapist. Why yes, that would suit me fine :) And on that note I must kick start my brain already. I'm so asleep today and I need to get ready for work.

Discombobulated
I feel all discombobulated this morning. Too many rainy days and I feel very drained. I want to go frolic outside but in sunshine dammit.
Too many cloudy days make me grumpy. It also makes it hard to get out of bed and get going in the morning. I sure won't be at work at 9 this morning. Looking more closer to 10am. Thankfully I work for a company that doesn't care what time I show up so long as I do my hours.
I would hate having a boss watch me come in looking at his watch "You're 3 minutes late"
