Nope not talking about the Motley Crue Song.
I've been watching Girls for a while now. At first it was like watching a train wreck but I couldn't help myself. Mostly because I didn't want to see how stupid one can be as a 20 something female in a large city. I was not much better at that age.
I like the TV show Girls even more after knowing it is written by a 20-something woman, Lena Dunham, for whom I have a lot of admiration.
It sucks what when someone is as outspoken as she is that the backlash is phenomenal. It's like they want to silence her. Interesting article I read this morning about Lena Denham. I will be hunting down her book. Dunno if my local library will have it or if I'll have to buy it, but I want to read it.
Hate speech comes in all forms. It amazes me the backlash against a young articulate woman, but EVERYONE Is CHARLIE, and that's mostly hate speech.
Just sayin....

Girls and Mistresses and Masters of Sex.
I've been enjoying the series Girls this past year. I likened it to being like watching a train wreck, but I'm hopelessly hooked. Though it's not a girly show like Army Wives, I still really enjoy it.
I was reading about the fact Girls was created by the woman who plays the lead character, Lena Dunham. That fact alone makes me find the show far more interesting. It's cool to have a show about young women created by a young woman!
One of the reviews I read had to do with how her characters are too homogeneous and in a city like NYC, you have more cultural diversity. Thing is sure, you may find groups of friends that are highly culturally or racially diverse, but the reality is, not everyone has culturally diverse friendships. Her choice of a mix of white girls is actually very plausible!
Montreal is also a very culturally diverse city. However at the moment my female friends are all white, and from the "west" so to speak. I have one friend who has British ancestry, one friend that has a mix of French Canadian and Scottish Canadian and the other female friend is a mix of Greek and French Canadian. All three a white and in a show like girls would get me the same comments as Lena Dunham! I used to have an Asian friend that lived in Montreal but we lost touch.
I started watching the show Mistresses last week. It's an American series based on a UK series. This one didn't flop from the get go like "Coupling". This show definitely has culturally diverse friends. You've got the black friend, the Asian friend and the 2 white half-sisters. Surprised there's no Latina in this mix, since the show is supposed to be set in LA!
The show mistresses has interesting plots and so far I'm very sucked in
The last new show I've been watching is "Masters of Sex", a playful name for a show loosely based on the lives of Masters and Johnson's, the ones who did the first definitive study on human sexuality. I really enjoy the show though find Dr Masters a major prick! I wonder if he was like that in real life, or if it makes for better television.

It's HOT in Cleveland.
So two days ago at work I happened to glance at the TV that's on one of the shelves around my desk area, and noticed Betty white and Jane Leeves on a TV show. I googled to see what was playing at that time of the day on CTV and realized it was a show called "HOt in Cleveland".
It also starts Valerie Bertinelli, and Wendie Malick. I ended up watching all of Season 1 and it's delightful. It reminds a bit of the show "Golden girls", except this time Betty White isn't playing the stupid/dense one. In fact the character BEtty White has as well as Janes Leeves floor me.
Currently this show is on it's 5th season, so I have plenty of comedy to watch for the next couple of days. The show is sure to have a 6th season as well, so this is a good thing.
Sadly still not the chick show I was looking for, but I can always use a good comedy to watch.

Trying out new things.
Last night decided it was time to try out some new TV shows.. well new in a manner of speaking. I decided years ago that I'm no longer watching shows in Season 1. If it doesn't make it to Season 2, I don't want to get into it and be totally disappointed that the show has been cancelled. At least if it makes it to 4-5 seasons, if I like the show, it gives me enough episodes to watch.
Two of the shows I was watching last season included Private Practice, and Army Wives. Both were not renewed. The sucky thing about it, is that they were my chick shows. I seem to need a good chick show to get my emotions out.
So last night I watched the first 2 episodes of Person of Interest. I like the premise, I like the show so far. I also watched 2 episodes of HBO's Girls. Don't think Girls is going to be the chick show I'm looking for, but OMG it was funny. I mean it's a bit like watching a train wreck. It's not all good but you can't help but watch it?
Of course shows I don't like when I first watch can still grow on me. NCIS is a case in point. I first watched NCIS because there was nothing good on TV during that time slot. It easily took months of me watching it before Abby grew on me, and then Gibbs. Now of course it's my favourite show, and I've just recently rewatched it from season 1.

NCIS - always a favorite TV show
It's funny, I didn't warm up to NCIS until the 3rd or even 4th season. It was a pure fluke too, it played for a while at a time where there was nothing good to watch elsewhere. I remember hating the first few episodes I watched, all except for Abby. Finally I watched the show the from first episode and then just fell in love with the show.
More then that I really enjoy the character of Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Amusingly enough, I'm a redhead with attitude - which seems to be his preferred type of woman - if he really did exist. Then again in real life, I'd probably want to smack him upside the head, like he does to others from time to time too. It's not so much the actor either. I'm not crazy about Mark Harmon. Never liked him in anything before. I've seen some of St Elsewhere and Chicago hope, two series he played in for years and never cared for him or noticed him before as an actor.
I generally prefer darker men. I tend to prefer Mediterraneans - that is men with olive skin, dark wavy or curly hair and deep brown eyes. I also find Latino, middle-eastern and black men attractive. Here Mark Harmon has whitish hair and blue eyes - not my thing in the least - but he's attractive with it. Go figure ?
NCIS is in it's 9th season and I still really enjoy it. Strangely enough I think it was watching NCIS that partly inspired my daughter to join the Canadian Navy, other then the fact she thought she'd look smashing in a Navy uniform :)
